At Swanwick School and Sports College, pupil voice is essential part of our curriculum. Each half term, formal School Council meetings are held with a group of pupils from across the school. Each tutor group has a representative at the School Council. The School Council representatives are elected by their peers at the beginning of the academic year to represent the pupil voice, views and opinions.
We believe, pupils should have their say in decisions, which affect their lives. Our School Council provides a meaningful way for pupils to voice their opinions and have their views taken in to account when decisions are being made. Not only does this help to develop and improve our school but also allows pupils to develop lifelong skills such as decision making, budgeting and team work.
Each School Council representative is responsible for sharing their tutor groups views and opinions on a given agenda. They are the important link between the staff and pupils. Councillors lead a tutor group discussion before and after the meeting. These class councils ensure pupils have the opportunity to raise issues, share ideas and take part in discussions that involve all their peers in reaching a democratic solution.
Throughout the year representatives discuss and make decisions on important topics including items such as: school fundraising ideas, environmental issues, the development of pupil policies and how to improve our school.
Annual meetings are also held at Derbyshire County Council Head Quarters, where our representatives get to develop their understanding on a given topic with schools across the county. This year the focus was improving the Mental Health and Wellbeing of our pupils.
School Council representatives are often praised for the mature way they approach the meetings. They are aware of the importance of the meetings and are proud representatives of the school.
